![]() Regina Calainho Choices " My choice was to express myself using brushes and spatulas on canvas with acrylic or water based paints mixed with white glue and dyes. Along with the paints I also work with materials such as paper, soil, vermiculite, bark, golden foil, in short: whatever nature can offer me to create texture. My biggest concern is to search the expression of my personality, my way of seeing the world, and that results in feelings and emotions that I translate into painting. I do not intend to reproduce what I see, but what I feel. My composition, or the arrangement of all elements that I dispose on canvas, express my feelings. Each colour plays its part to compose the whole idea and the final goal is to achieve harmony. The process of creating a painting is not made all at once, but constructed part by part, movement by movement. A creative impulse arises and the process lasts until I feel that the composition makes sense to me. My style favours spontaneity and movement and the result is abstract shapes- lines, traces and points. The challenge is to register movement in a static media- the canvas. The paintings reflect an internal movement of self-knowledge that has the intention to disaccustom internalised habits of always pleasing everyone, doing the right and beautiful things. Spontaneity is to be whole, integral, with positive and negative aspects, pretty and ugly."
